Penn State, Ohio State Team Up To Encourage Fan Safety & Responsibility

Penn State and Ohio State leaders are teaming up to preach responsibility ahead of the universities’ highly anticipated football showdown Saturday night.

Penn State President Eric Barron and Ohio State President Kristina Johnson both conveyed their excitement for the game but encouraged fans to follow coronavirus safety guidelines as best they can.

“I ask every Penn Stater — students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends — to respect our team’s commitment and sacrifice, by cheering them on in a safe and responsible manner,” Barron said. “That means social distancing, wearing masks and limiting the size of gatherings. Together, we can show We Are the best fans in the nation. Whether at home this year, or back in the stadium next year, We Are a community that cares.”

Barron added he’s looking forward to the game more than usual since he wasn’t sure there’d be one to begin with just a few months ago.

Under the Big Ten’s conference-wide guidelines, no fans can attend football games this year. However, Johnson hopes spectators will make the most of their virtual tailgates by planning ahead and staying smart.

“It is great to see our football team back in action. What we have always wanted is a chance for our student-athletes to compete in the sports they love,” Johnson said. “We have one shot to finish the semester and season strong, and I know President Barron joins me in urging all of our fans to celebrate safely. I’m asking Buckeye Nation to make every game a home game and stay healthy by watching with their roommates and family members at home.”

The No. 18 Nittany Lions will kick off against the No. 3 Buckeyes at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. The game will be Penn State’s fifth-consecutive prime-time game against Ohio State at Beaver Stadium.
