State College Police Report ‘Drastic Drop’ In Penn State-Ohio State Activity

Although a combination of Halloween and a highly anticipated football game against Ohio State traditionally would’ve pointed toward a hectic few days, State College police weren’t too busy last weekend.

The State College Police Department responded to 117 calls in the borough between Friday, October 30, and Sunday, November 1, according to a report published Wednesday. When Penn State hosted the Buckeyes in 2018, police responded to 133 calls throughout the borough over the weekend.

“The 2020 weekend also incorporated Halloween, which is traditionally one of the busiest activity weekends for our agency,” the department said. “Given the combination of these events in 2020, our agency experienced a drastic drop of activity from the last meeting of these two teams.”

Citations for public drunkenness and underages dropped by 14 and four, respectively, from 2018 to 2020. Police issued one open container citation last weekend compared to three in 2018.

Over the two-year span, non-traffic citations fell by 30, while alcohol calls where medical assistance was required dropped by 19. However, noise complaint citations increased by two, up to 13 from 11 in 2018.

State College police issued two warnings and five citations for violations of the borough’s coronavirus mitigation ordinance gathering guidelines.

Law enforcement busted several large-scale apartment parties two weeks ago when Penn State opened its season on the road against Indiana. According to their report, police found each party consisted of at least 100 people and violated the borough’s ordinance.

A few dozen “persons of interest” involved with the parties were later identified in a follow-up investigation to be potentially met with citations, fines, and disciplinary action from Penn State, if applicable.
