Matt McGloin Eyes Career Change With New Football Podcast

After a brief stint with the XFL’s New York Guardians, former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin has begun a life outside of football with his own podcast, “The Underrated Hour.”

Even though McGloin’s main interest was always being on the football field, the former broadcast journalism major has always had an interest in broadcasting.

“I always wanted to get into broadcasting, whether it’s on TV, radio, or even podcasting,” McGloin said. “I knew that once my playing days were over that this is something that I wanted to venture into.”

Six weeks after his career in the XFL had ended, McGloin immediately recruited some friends and family members to help get the podcast up off of the ground. McGloin’s older brother, John, and friends Chase Senior and Dave Mehall co-host the show with McGloin.

“I think we’re a good combination,” McGloin said. “We all try to have fun with it, and we really enjoy it. We talk a lot about college football and the NFL, and it’s been really fun so far. We all have different perspectives and different takes on the game itself, and it all blends together very well.”

It easy to attract a large audience to a podcast if you can bring on some good guests, and McGloin has certainly done that. Former guests of the show include James Franklin, Todd Blackledge, Ki-Jana Carter, and even Anthony “Spice” Adams.

“We’ve hosted a couple of former teammates of mine, with Penn State and the Oakland Raiders,” he said. “We’ve been really lucky that these guys are really willing to jump on the podcast and take 25 to 30 minutes of their time to talk about football.”

Although McGloin mainly talks about the NFL and college football, McGloin also likes to sprinkle in a touch of pop culture and humor.

“We talk a lot about obviously football, and we also like to mix in pop culture stuff,” McGloin said. “On the last episode, we spoke about if it is too early for Christmas music and to set up for Christmas decorations, and stuff like that. We also like to talk a lot about beer, and had one of our episodes at a local brewery.”

McGloin also brings a very unique perspective to the show given his time in the NFL and starting at Penn State for three years.

“I try to help people understand that this is the way professional and college football works in certain situations and during games,” he said. “Obviously, I’ve gotten to experience being around some of the best players and coaches of all-time. I don’t think many people get to experience that. I think it’s a great listen for fans that love the game and want to learn more about how the game works in different situations.”
