Penn State’s 2021 MLK Jr. Commemoration Events To Virtually Celebrate King’s Legacy

Penn State’s Martin Luther King Jr. Student Committee will host a slew of virtual events to commemorate and celebrate Dr. King’s legacy. The week-long celebration will kick off Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18.

Virtual festivities, which will be available to the entire Penn State community, are listed below.

MLK Jr. Day of Service — January 18 @ 5 p.m.

The group will host an evening of virtual service to celebrate King’s legacy and encourage Penn Staters to give back to their communities. It’ll take place online from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Kickoff Debate Series — The Rally For Reform — January 19 @ 6 p.m.

Join the Student Restorative Justice Initiative and World in Conversation to kick off a virtual debate series that will take place throughout January and February.

Evening Celebration Part 1: An Evening with Michelle Alexander — January 21 @ 7 p.m.

A moderated Q&A and discussion will be held with author, legal scholar, and civil rights advocate Michelle Alexander. She is known for her bestselling book, “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.”

Evening Celebration Part 2: Art and Activism with Noname — January 22 @ 7 p.m.

Local student organizations will showcase their creative works at this event. It’ll be followed by a discussion between two guest musicians about activism and art. Noname is a Chicago-based rapper who first gained attention when she appeared on Chance The Rapper’s mixtape, Acid Rap.
