State College Extends COVID-19 Ordinance Through May 31

State College Borough has extended its COVID-19 mitigation ordinance through at least May 31, the borough announced earlier this month.

The measures, first introduced back in August, require community members to wear face masks in public when they’re within 6 feet of other individuals or are accompanied by anyone outside of family or housemates. Mask-wearing is required both indoors and outdoors.

Additionally, the ordinance places restrictions on large lines outside businesses and in-person gatherings. Although there are a few exceptions, the legislation limits residential gatherings to 10 people, or no more than the size of a household that exceeds 10, and outdoor gatherings on public properties to 25.

The State College Borough Council unanimously voted to extend the ordinance. It’ll last until the current May 31 deadline or when (if?) the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Centre Region Council of Governments rescind their emergency declarations — whichever comes first.

Those found in violation of the ordinance could receive a citation that’s punishable by a $300 fine, plus any additional court costs. So far, the borough has issued around 100 citations for various violations.

Back in October, Penn State Police began enforcing the borough’s ordinance on university property, including campus.
