Gary Steen Flips From Pitt To Penn State Wrestling

Penn State wrestling pried a talented in-state recruit away from Pitt Friday when Hermitage, Pennsylvania native and two-time state champion Gary Steen announced he’ll join the Nittany Lions’ Class of 2021.

“After much thought and time I am excited to announce that I will be furthering my academic and athletic career at Penn State University,” Steen said. “I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches that supported me along the way.”

Steen was the Pennsylvania state champion in 2018 and 2020. He placed third at 106 lbs. while wrestling for Reynolds High School in western Pennsylvania.

The former Pitt commit will most likely wrestle in the 120-lbs. class at Penn State, where he currently ranks No. 7 nationally for his age.

Steen is the third member of Cael Sanderson’s Class of 2021, joining Shayne Van Ness and Alex Facundo. The three incoming wrestlers will watch as Penn State begins this year’s belated season with a tri-meet against Indiana and Northwestern on Saturday.
