Penn State Hockey’s Alex Limoges Nominated For Hobey Baker Memorial Award

Penn State men’s hockey captain Alex Limoges is up for the most prestigious individual award in college hockey.

The team announced Monday that the star senior forward has been nominated for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.

The award is given to the top collegiate hockey player each season. 50 players are nominated by the athletic departments of all Division I hockey programs with a maximum of three players per program.

This is the second time in Limoges’ career that he’s been nominated for the award, as he was also up for it during 2018-19 season. He joins a prestigious group of Big Ten stars nominated, including Kent Johnson, Owen Power, Jack LaFontaine, Cam York, and Alex Steeves.

Limoges is currently tied for the team lead in points with 16 so far this season, which is good enough for tenth in the conference. He also has nine goals, which leads the team and is good enough for third in the conference. Limoges netted his 50th career goal in an overtime win against Notre Dame last Thursday. His 50 career goals are the second-most for any active player in the country.

Limoges’ play on the ice has been critical for the Nittany Lions over the recent stretch of games where they’ve gone 9-3-1 after starting the season 0-5-0. Limoges was named captain early in the offseason and had been the main leader for the Nittany Lions during the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is the hardest year to come in and be captain of a team,” head coach Guy Gadowsky said. “What he’s done off the ice has been far greater than what he’s done on the ice.”

Fans can vote once per day per device during the first phase of voting, which will end on March 7. The top 10 players will then be voted on during the second phase of fan voting that will take place from March 18-28. The top three candidates will be announced on April 1 with a winner selected on April 9.
