Update, Thursday, February 4: Tyler Bowen is officially headed for Jacksonville.

After some reports earlier this week, Penn State football head coach James Franklin confirmed Thursday night that the tight ends coach will become a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ coaching staff.

“We would like to thank Tyler for all of his contributions to our program,” Franklin wrote. “From coaching Tyler at Maryland to working with him as a graduate assistant and now as a position coach, it has been incredibly fulfilling to see him develop as a leader and a professional. We are very excited for Tyler to advance his career in the NFL.”

Original Story: Penn State football tight ends coach and offensive recruiting coordinator Tyler Bowen is headed to the NFL, according to a report by Lions247 Monday night.

According to the report, Bowen is expected to be named part of Urban Meyer’s staff with the Jacksonville Jaguars “later this week.”

Bowen just wrapped up his third consecutive season as a full-time assistant with the Nittany Lions. He also served as a graduate assistant for Penn State in 2014 before spending two seasons at Fordham and one at Maryland. The 31-year-old played his college ball as an offensive lineman for the Terps from 2007 to 2009.

The offensive-minded coach’s first year managing the tight ends was in 2018. Pat Freiermuth burst onto the scene as a freshman that season, as he hauled in 26 catches and an impressive eight touchdowns. Bowen helped developed the “Aces” moniker with Freiermuth and the rest of the position group.

As a recruiting coordinator, Bowen helped sign the No. 11 class in the nation in 2019. Most recently, the Nittany Lions’ class of 2020 ranked No. 15 while 2021 came in at No. 25.

Bowen was named a co-offensive coordinator after handling the play calling duties in Penn State’s exciting 2019 Cotton Bowl Classic victory over Memphis. The Nittany Lions’ hung 53 points on the Tigers en route to the win, along with 529 total yards. That was good for most points scored in a bowl game in program history.

Penn State Athletics has not yet confirmed Bowen’s departure. We’ll update this post as more information becomes available.
