UPUA Passes Resolution Condemning Hate Speech Against Black Caucus

The 15th Assembly of the University Park Undergraduate Association met virtually Wednesday night for its third spring semester meeting.

The meeting began with a special presentation from Paul Shrivastava, director of the Sustainability Institute, and Douglas Goodstein, the student programs coordinator for the Sustainability Institute.

In their presentation, Shrivastava and Goodstein encouraged UPUA representatives to get involved with sustainability. They said that change does not happen overnight and dedicated and continuous hard work don’t go unnoticed.

“You need to see yourself as people, as citizens, and as people who are going to be the most affected by changes to the environment,” Shrivastava said.

The second special presentation of the evening was from Penn State’s Council of Commonwealth Student Governments. Following speeches from UPUA President Zach McKay and Vice President Lexy Pathickal, the assembly moved into new business.

New Business

UPUA tabled its first piece of new business for the evening when it couldn’t meet quorum. The policy would’ve proposed revised dates for UPUA’s 2021 Election Day that account for spring break’s absence.

Only 29 of the necessary 31 voters needed to meet quorum were present.

The final piece of legislation for the night was Resolution 46-15.

Resolution 46-15 condemns and calls for legal action against the “Zoom-bombing” that occurred during the Black Caucus’s presentation during the spring Involvement Fair.

During the meeting, 51 unauthorized users joined and allegedly directed racist and homophobic slurs at three Black Caucus Executive Board members. They also purportedly sent anti-Semitic and white supremacist language and symbols in the chat.

In the legislation, UPUA proposed that university administrators take appropriate federal, state, or local legal action against the individuals involved in the attack.

Resolution 46-15 passed unanimously.

Following executive and committee reports, the meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
