SPA To Host Penn State Football Alum, Mathematician John Urschel For Virtual Lecture

Penn State’s Student Programming Association (SPA) will host former Penn State football offensive lineman John Urschel for a virtual lecture Tuesday, February 16, the organization announced Friday.

The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. that evening. Students interested in attending can register for their free ticket here.

SPA will work with WPSU Radio to host the Zoom lecture, and tickets will be required to enter.

Urschel is most widely known for his dual accomplishments as an NFL football player for the Baltimore Ravens, and later, a mathematician. While he was at Penn State, he balanced his success on the football field with his doctoral degree in mathematics.

After joining the Ravens in 2014, Urschel went on to play 40 games for the team before retiring at the age of 26 to pursue his Ph.D. candidacy in mathematics at MIT. Since retiring, he has also authored a memoir, “Mind and Matter: A Life In Math And Football,” where he discussed topics ranging from Black representation in STEM fields to what it means to be a modern mathematician.

Urschel’s lecture is free for all Penn State students and funded by their student-initiated fee. Those who are interested in attending the event will need to verify their Penn State IDs to gain entry.
