Penn State Football Needs To Reignite In-State Rivalries With Games In Baseball Stadiums

Penn State football fans may fondly remember December 2014. It was James Franklin’s first year as head coach, and, even better, the month when the Nittany Lions snuck out an overtime win over Boston College in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.

That was the last time Penn State played in a baseball stadium. This generally makes sense, and football teams playing on the diamond generally doesn’t. But that needs to change, and it all stems from some other Big Ten schools.

Purdue and Northwestern playing at Wrigley Field next fall is pretty epic. There’s a lot of history at that ballpark, and to hopefully see a football game there would be a remarkable experience.

Unfortunately, Pennsylvania’s PNC Park and Citizen’s Bank Park are not as historic as Wrigley Field. However, that doesn’t mean Penn State shouldn’t schedule a game at either of those two stadiums. It would be the perfect way to reignite some good old-fashioned in-state rivalries.

With no more games against Pitt currently scheduled, offering to travel to Pittsburgh to play at PNC Park might be a great way to kick off negotiations. It’ll be a home game for the Panthers and a different experience for the Nittany Lions. Plus, there will be a way higher attendance since it isn’t a normal Pitt game!

The more intriguing matchup, in my opinion, is playing at Citizen’s Bank Park against Temple. Penn State has already played Pitt a lot recently and handled the team rather well. Why not have a new challenge against the pride of Philadelphia?

College football is all about the experience. These athletes get to go to different places and have these unique adventures. There should be more games in unique settings, like what Purdue and Northwestern are doing this fall. Penn State has two opportunities to do that, and it should seriously consider taking those opportunities.

Besides, it’s not like the Phillies or Pirates are doing anything in the fall, right?
