Penn State field hockey’s season opener against Michigan slated for this Friday has been postponed, the team announced Monday afternoon.

The postponement is due to COVID-19 concerns within Michigan’s program.

This is the second time this year COVID-19 issues on Michigan’s end have affected Penn State Athletics. Several contests between the two sides were postponed or canceled in early February when the Wolverines’ had a program-wide pause for two weeks. Penn State men’s basketball, men’s hockey, track and field, and wrestling were all forced to postpone contests against the maize and blue.

It’s unclear at the moment whether or not this game will be rescheduled, but Penn State Athletics stated that “the institutions will work with the Big Ten Conference to identify rescheduling options.”

The Nittany Lions were set to open their season against the Wolverines in Virginia Beach, but they’ll stay down there and kick things off against Iowa instead this Sunday. Char Morett-Curtiss’ squad will be in Virginia Beach the following weekend for contests against Northwestern and the Hawkeyes once again.

Penn State’s home opener isn’t until Friday, March 12 against Maryland.
