Penn State Experiences Canvas Outage
Update, 5:15 p.m.: After about an hour of downtime, Canvas looks like it’s back up and running.
Instructure’s online portal confirmed a “fix” had been implemented, and its development team would monitor the results.
Original Story: Penn State students were in for a rude awakening Wednesday afternoon when Canvas, the university’s go-to digital learning platform, suffered a widespread outage just before 4:30 p.m.
At the time of writing, Canvas servers are experiencing a “major outage” that prevents users from even logging in. Many students reporting receiving a “504 Gateway Timeout” error when trying to fire Canvas up from home.
Instructure, Inc., the Salt Lake City-based educational tech firm that develops and publishes Canvas, said it’s currently investigating the outage. Users at home can check Canvas’ status using Instructure’s online webpage.
“Our DevOps team is continuing to investigate the cause of these page errors,” Instructure said at 4:50 p.m. “We apologize that we don’t have a narrower scope of the issue at this time, and appreciate your patience.”
Penn State did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Canvas’ outage Wednesday afternoon.
Although online learning came to a grinding halt, students across the country still vented their frustrations using social media.
