Former Penn State Football Stars Chris Godwin & Allen Robinson Franchise Tagged

Former Penn State wide receivers Chris Godwin and Allen Robinson both received franchise tags on Tuesday ahead of NFL free agency.

Godwin anticipated getting the franchise tag and received one that will keep him with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at least for this season. Godwin had 65 receptions for 840 yards and seven touchdowns this past year en route to a Super Bowl victory. He is projected to make $15.8 million under the tag this season before looking for a long-term deal in Tampa or elsewhere next offseason.

In his time at Penn State, Godwin was fourth in both career touchdown receptions (18) and career receiving yards (2,404) in program history in only three seasons. The Middletown, Delaware native was a big part of the 2016 Big Ten Championship team and was picked in the third round of the 2017 draft by Tampa Bay.

Robinson just finished up a three-year, $42 million deal he signed with the Chicago Bears back in 2018. He had 102 catches for 1,250 yards and six touchdowns on a bad Chicago offense in 2020.

Robinson expressed frustration with the Bears during the season with contract extension talks. In an interview with NFL writer Tyler Dunne last month, Robinson said that he hadn’t been offered a viable option by the organization to continue playing in Chicago. The concern for the Bears organization is that Robinson doesn’t have to sign the franchise tag, meaning this could be a story to monitor as the offseason continues.

Robinson played at Penn State from 2011 to 2013. He had 17 touchdowns in three seasons, leading the Big Ten in receptions and receiving yards in both 2012 and 2013. He was taken in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Both Godwin and Robinson were considered some of the most highly touted options entering this years’ free agency, but both will have to wait a little bit longer until they can hit the open market.
