Penn State Students To Host Candlelight Vigil For Victims In Atlanta Shooting

The Queer and Trans People of Color at Penn State will host a candlelight vigil Sunday night to honor the March 16 Atlanta shootings.

The vigil, as well as an open mic session, will take place at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, on Old Main’s steps.

Eight people were killed in the shooting, including six people of Asian descent, according to The New York Times.

Celeste Good, an Asian student involved with the organization, said the event will hopefully provide Asian students and community members a place to come together and heal.

“Obviously, this is a heartbreaking tragedy that shouldn’t have happened,” Good said. “It’s important to recognize that [the victims] were people at the end of the day…I’m upset that it took a shooting for people to sit up and start listening to what Asian people have been saying for over a year.”

Good said the open mic session should also give people a platform to make their voices heard and speak out against violence toward those of Asian descent, which has heightened amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“There will be candles and an open mic so Asian students and community members can say whatever they need to,” Good said. “It’s supposed to be a healing space.”
