Former Penn State Hoops Guard Jamari Wheeler To Transfer To Ohio State

Former Penn State men’s basketball guard Jamari Wheeler is headed to Columbus, folks.

Wheeler announced via Twitter Tuesday night that he’ll play his last season of college hoops at Ohio State.

“First and foremost, I want to thank PSU so much for the opportunity to become a Nittany Lion student-athlete and graduate,” Wheeler wrote. “This university gave me an opportunity to compete at the highest level of college basketball and these past four years have been nothing short of amazing.”

Wheeler also personally thanked former head coach Pat Chambers and his staff for “making [his] experience like no other.”

The guard from Live Oak, Florida built a reputation as a defensive-minded guard over the course of his four-year Penn State career. This past season, Wheeler started in every game and averaged 6.8 points, 3.5 assists, and 1.8 steals, all of which were career highs.

Wheeler also added the three-point shot to his repertoire as a captain over the course of the 2020-21 campaign. He shot 35.7% from deep this season and and hit 25 from beyond the arc.

As a leader for the Nittany Lions who also started every game of the 2019-20 campaign, Wheeler was one of the most outspoken players after Pat Chambers was asked to resign.

“We miss [Coach Chambers] a lot,” Wheeler said in November. “We wish he was here, still battling with us, helping us through this season. But unfortunately, some circumstances won’t allow him to be here with us. We’re still confused and don’t understand how that happened…Hopefully, he gets another chance to coach at a high-major and be a head coach again because he’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever played for.”

Wheeler reportedly entered the portal just after the season ended a few weeks ago, along with five other Nittany Lions. Izaiah Brockington announced his decision to return to Penn State this past Friday, but four Penn State stars remain in the portal, including John Harrar and Seth Lundy.
