Penn State Officially Welcomes Micah Shrewsberry To Happy Valley

New Penn State men’s basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry was officially welcomed to Happy Valley Tuesday night through a livestream that included his whole family and a few special guests.

To kick things off, the voice of the Bryce Jordan Center, Jeff Brown, stopped by to welcome Shrewsberry in the best way he knows how: by saying his name in that booming announcer voice we all know and love.

Next up, Shrewsberry introduced the Penn State community to his family. He gushed about his wife, Molly, even noting how they went to junior and senior prom together. He also introduced his four children.

“Those are my pride and joys,” Shrewsberry said. “My family is special. I love every part of the family. It’s a big part of my whole life and career.”

We then got to see a couple of messages from some past and present Penn State basketball players welcoming Shrewsberry. Ross Travis, Calvin Booth, Myles Dread, and Izaiah Brockington all offered warm welcomes to the new coach.

Penn State alum Tim Frazier then hopped on the livestream to talk to Shrewsberry and welcome him to Happy Valley. Frazier talked about how Shrewsberry helped him get his foot in the door in the NBA and how it felt to have someone in his corner at that level.

But wait, there’s more! Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens and his family stopped by the livestream, all dressed up in Penn State gear, to support Stevens’ former assistant coach.

“We’ll do whatever they ask as long as we get on the list for football tickets,” Stevens joked.

Stevens got more serious, however, when talking about the importance of Shrewsberry and his family.

“We’ve always considered the Shrewsberry’s family and [Shrewsberry] said something about me being a mentor, and that can’t be further from the truth because we have been on this journey together,” Stevens said. “If anything, I’ve leaned on him for a lot of this. He assimilated to the NBA a lot quicker than I did.”

There was another surprise from the NBA waiting to congratulate Shrewsberry: Celtics forward and NBA All-Star Jaylen Brown. He discussed what Shrewsberry brings to the table as a coach and what he’ll be like as head coach.

“He’s very intense, very serious about the game and its craft. But at the same time, he finds a lot of ways to take the pressure off,” Brown said.

And with that, the festivities concluded. Shrewsberry is now expected to get to work, especially with some uncertainty surrounding the roster. Let’s see what Coach Shrews can do!
