Forward Ben Copeland Transfers To Penn State Men’s Hockey

Update, June 3: Penn State men’s hockey has officially signed Colorado College forward Ben Copeland as a transfer, the team announced Thursday morning.

Copeland racked up 50 points in 97 games with the Tigers. He’ll arrive in Happy Valley with two years of eligibility remaining.

“Ben makes a lot of plays and will really add to our team speed by how he skates,” head coach Guy Gadowsky said. “It is always great to add a character player with previous collegiate experience to our lineup.”

Colorado College’s Ben Copeland is joining the Nittany Lions for the 2021-22 season, according to a post on his Twitter account.

Copeland comes from the hockey hotbed on Edina, Minnesota, the same hometown of current defenseman Clayton Phillips. He spent the last three years in the Tiger’s program, amassing 50 points in 97 games. His best season came in his freshman year when he had 21 points in 41 games.

This year, Copeland had 11 points on a Tigers team that finished last in its conference with a 4-16-2 record.

Copeland’s announcement comes one day after Colorado College hired former Michigan assistant coach Kris Mayotte to be the new head coach of the program.

Copeland has played the majority of his time at center, mostly on the Tiger’s top two lines. Following the departure of Aarne Talvitie to the AHL and the graduation of Tim Doherty, Copeland should compete for top minutes with the Nittany Lions next season.
