Former Penn State Hoops Guard Rasir Bolton Transfers To Gonzaga

Former Penn State men’s basketball guard Rasir Bolton is off to his third college hoops program in four years.

The Virginia native announced via Twitter Friday he’ll transfer to Gonzaga. He entered the portal back in early April after two seasons at Iowa State.

Bolton transferred to the Cyclones after his 2018-19 freshman season in Happy Valley. He later alleged in in July 2020 that former Penn State head coach Pat Chambers said in he wanted to “loosen the noose that’s around [his] neck,” and the comment led to his transfer. Other misconduct allegations surfaced after that comment was made public, and an internal investigation eventually led to Chambers’ resignation.

After a productive freshman season with the Nittany Lions, Bolton became a constant source of offense during his time at Iowa State. He was second on the team with 14.7 points per game in 2019-20, and followed that with a team-leading 15.5 points and 3.9 assists. That was enough to earn Bolton a spot on the All-Big 12 Third Team, but the Cyclones finished with an ugly 2-22 overall record and didn’t win a game in conference play this season.

The 6’3″ guard now joins a much more dominant team in Spokane, Washington. Gonzaga went undefeated all the way to the National Championship this past season, but fell to Baylor 86-70 in the big one at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Bulldogs went 31-2 last year and were poised for a run in the Big Dance before it was cancelled by the pandemic, and fell to Texas Tech in the Elite Eight in the year prior.

Gonzaga has plenty of depth at just about every position, and Bolton will only bring more of that to the guard spot.
