Shaka Toney Drafted No. 246 Overall By Washington Football Team

Shaka Toney is off to the NFL, folks.

The Washington Football Team selected Toney in the seventh round with the 246th on Saturday. The defensive end is the fourth Nittany Lion off the board thus far in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Toney spent five seasons with the Nittany Lions after arriving in Happy Valley back in 2016 as a three-star recruit. Following a redshirt season in his first year, Toney went on to total 112 tackles, 20.5 sacks, four passes defended, and four forced fumbles over the next four seasons.

His best seasons came in 2019 and 2020 when he totaled 40 tackles (6.5 sacks) and 31 tackles (five sacks), respectively. He earned second-team All-Big Ten honors by the conference’s coaches in 2019, as well as first-team honors from the media, coaches, and Associated Press following the 2020 season.

The Philadelphia native impressed throughout the draft process, first opening eyes at the Senior Bowl and then putting up impressive numbers at his Pro Day. Toney’s athleticism was on full display during his Pro Day, as he ran a 4.51 40-yard dash, put up 24 reps on the bench, had a 10’8″ broad jump, and a superb 39-inch vertical.

Toney will join fellow Nittany Lion Troy Apke in Washington. He’ll play under defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.
