Zech McPhearson Drafted No. 123 Overall By Philadelphia Eagles

Former Penn State football cornerback Zech McPhearson has found a home in the NFL. McPhearson was drafted No. 123 overall in the fourth round by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2021 NFL Draft Saturday.

The Columbia, Maryland native was a four-star recruit in the 2016 class and opted to play football at Penn State over the likes of Alabama, Boston College, California, and Clemson. McPhearson had a relatively uneventful Penn State career, playing in 24 games over two years, accumulating 16 tackles and three pass break-ups. Following the 2018 season, he decided to transfer to Texas Tech.

Down in Lubbock, McPhearson began to find his footing. In his first season as a Red Raider, he started in all 12 games and had 51 tackles. McPhearson was also a standout player on special teams, blocking two kicks over the course of the season.

In 2020, McPhearson broke out in a big way, becoming one of the best defensive backs in the Big 12 and in the country. He lead the Red Raiders in interceptions (four) and fumble recoveries (two), and was fifth on the team in tackles with 53 on the season. McPhearson was voted as a team captain by his teammates in only his second season in Lubbock.

Draft experts, like Dane Brugler of The Athletic, saw McPhearson as one of the most underrated corners in the entire draft. Now he will get a shot with Eagles and have a fighting chance to earn a roster spot come the start of the 2021 NFL season.
