Pat Freiermuth will officially wear No. 88 with the Pittsburgh Steelers to begin his NFL career, the team announced Thursday.

Freiermuth previously wore No. 87 at Penn State for three seasons.

Freiermuth is just the latest Nittany Lion to receive a new NFL jersey number. Micah Parsons will stick with No. 11 with the Dallas Cowboys, while Odafe Oweh and Will Fries will wear No. 99 and No. 75 for the Baltimore Ravens and Indianapolis Colts, respectively. KJ Hamler, who joined the Denver Broncos last season, is switching to wear No. 1.

The Steelers selected Freiermuth No. 55 overall in the NFL Draft’s second round in late April. He was the first tight end drafted out of Penn State since the Miami Dolphins selected Mike Gesicki in 2018.

Freiermuth set Penn State football’s career touchdown receptions by a tight end record with 16 and sits at eighth all-time in touchdown grabs for the Nittany Lions. He also set another program record by finishing his career catching a pass in 29 straight games.

Freiermuth will debut his new black and gold threads when the Steelers head to Buffalo on Sunday, September 12, to begin the 2021 NFL season.
