Penn State ‘Bike Den’ To Host Ribbon Cutting August 13

Penn State will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony next week before opening a new one-stop shop for local cyclists.

The “Bike Den” will be located on the ground level of the new West Deck on the west side of campus. There, cyclists of all ages and experience levels can work on maintenance projects, attend educational workshops, and chat with fellow bikers.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 13, to celebrate the official opening.

Bike Den hours will begin on Tuesday, August 17. The space will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

The West Deck, which opened in May, features pro-biking infrastructure that should pair nicely with the Bike Den. The deck is home to a covered bike parking area on its first level that can hold up to 100 bikes. It also boasts a repair station and tire pump.

From August through November, the Bike Den will host maintenance clinics covering topics like changing tires and maintaining breaks. Workshop details haven’t been released yet.

“One of our goals at Transportation Services is to develop programs and services that improve campus and community sustainability, and the Bike Den will help us continue those efforts,” Sustainable Transportation Program Coordinator Cecily Zhu said.

The Bike Den is currently recruiting volunteers to staff it and assist with workshops and clinics. Volunteers must be 18 years or older, fill out an application, and complete a background check.

Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt, access to volunteer-only hours of workshop space, and priority reservations for workshops. Applications can be found here.
