Mike Yurcich To Call Penn State’s Plays From The Field

It’s Wisconsin week, folks.

No. 19 Penn State is set to kick off its season on the road against No. 12 Wisconsin in just five days. With that, the team sent out the game notes for the season-opening matchup.

Included were the Nittany Lions’ 10 assistant coaches, along with whether they’ll be coaching from the field or booth this upcoming week. We all know head coach James Franklin will be roaming the sideline throughout the game, but here’s where the rest of Penn State’s coaches will be stationed when the Nittany Lions take the field Saturday:

  • Mike Yurcich, Offensive Coordinator & Quarterbacks — Field
  • Brent Pry, Defensive Coordinator & Linebackers — Field
  • Joe Lorig, Special Teams Coordinator & Outside Linebackers — Field
  • Ty Howle, Tight Ends — Booth
  • Anthony Poindexter, Co-Defensive Coordinator & Safeties — Booth
  • John Scott Jr., Defensive Line — Field
  • Ja’Juan Seider, Run Game Coordinator & Running Backs — Field
  • Terry Smith, Associate Head Coach & Cornerbacks — Field
  • Taylor Stubblefield, Wide Receivers — Field
  • Phil Trautwein, Offensive Line — Field

The most significant change from last season comes from the offensive coordinator spot. Last year’s offensive coordinator, Kirk Ciarrocca, called games from the booth. Mike Yurcich is choosing to take a different approach, which shouldn’t be a surprise given his intense nature.

The two other newcomers on Penn State’s coaching staff are both setting up shop in the booth. While former tight ends coach Tyler Bowen coached from the field last season, his successor, Ty Howle, will head up to the booth. Former co-defensive coordinator Tim Banks coached from the booth last season, which is what his replacement, Anthony Poindexter, will also do.

All returning coaches are set to coach from the same location as last year barring any changes throughout the season.
