Penn State Women’s Soccer Stays At No. 7 In Week Two Poll, Men Fall To No. 17

Penn State women’s soccer is ranked at No. 7 again in the Week Two United Soccer Coaches poll.

The Nittany Lions began the year at No. 10, but a strong 3-0 start has seen Erica Dambach’s squad climb into single digits.

This week, Penn State dispatched Hofstra 2-1 with goals from Payton Linnehan and Ally Schlegel. Linnehan now has five goals and two assists through three contests, and is playing like a National Player of the Year contender.

The top five all stayed the same this week. Florida State, UNC, Virginia, UCLA, and Duke are once again at the top of the heap in the early season.

Penn State hits the road for the first time this week, and won’t return home to Jeffrey Field for nearly a month. The Nittany Lions play West Virginia on Thursday and UCF on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Penn State men’s soccer dropped six spots to No. 17 in the Week One United Soccer Coaches poll.

Jeff Cook’s squad dug itself a hole in the season opener on Thursday, as George Mason held the Nittany Lions to a draw while inclement weather forced the suspension of the match with just five minutes to play.

However, Penn State rebounded with a 3-0 win over Syracuse on Sunday, which most likely saved the Nittany Lions from falling out of the rankings all together.

There was some shakeup in the men’s top five. Big Ten foes Indiana are now No. 1 in the nation — in both United Soccer Coaches poll and TopDrawerSoccer poll — followed by Georgetown, Pitt, Clemson, and Washington.

The Nittany Lions will follow their female counterparts to Morgantown to face West Virginia on Friday. The Mountaineers will be a tough challenge, as they defeated No. 3 Pitt on Monday.

That will be their only match of the week, as they return home to face American the following Monday, September 6.
