Historic Rainfall, Potential Flooding Expected In Centre County Wednesday
Bring an umbrella to class, folks.
Near-record-setting rain is expected in State College Wednesday as Centre County feels the effects of what was once Hurricane Ida. According to AccuWeather, the storms are expected to produce 3.1 inches of rain, but localized measurements could top out between 5 and 7 inches.
As a result, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the area. For now, it extends to 10:30 p.m. A flash flood watch is in effect through 8 a.m. Thursday.
Wednesday’s storms have the potential to produce a top-five wettest day on record in south-central Pennsylvania, according to the NWS. A storm producing 5 to 7 inches of rain has only a 1-2% chance of happening in a year.
For now, it’s important to keep flood safety tips in mind. As always, do not drive through a flash flood. Six inches of water could cause your car to stall, and a foot could send your vehicle downstream.
