Penn State’s Stripe Out By The Numbers

Once again, it’s time for Penn State football’s annual Stripe Out game.

Saturday night’s game against Indiana will mark the Nittany Lions’ sixth Stripe Out game since its inception in 2015. The program owns a 4-1 record in the annual theme game, including a 28-3 win over Rutgers in the first iteration.

On that day in 2015, 103,323 fans were attendance. The packed crowd saw Saquon Barkley dominate the Scarlet Knights with 195 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Penn State began the Stripe Out tradition with a three-game winning streak. After it beat Rutgers, it took down Temple 34-27 in 2016 and Nebraska 56-44 in 2017.

Against the Owls, Chris Godwin shined with seven catches for 117 yards and one touchdown. In the win over the Cornhuskers, Barkley scored three rushing touchdowns to bring his career total to 39, breaking the previous record of 38 set by Lydell Mitchell.

The Nittany Lions’ first and only Stripe Out defeat came in 2018 in a 21-17 loss to Michigan State. Despite the losing effort, Miles Sanders balled out with 162 rushing yards and one touchdown.

The program’s most recent Stripe Out game came in 2019 when James Franklin’s squad narrowly beat Pitt 17-10. Penn State’s rushing attack led the way in that one, as Journey Brown ran for 109 yards, while Noah Cain and Devyn Ford pitched in one touchdown each.

Last year, of course, there were no fans in the stands due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which means there was no Stripe Out.

In the five Stripe Out games, Penn State has outscored its opponents 152-105. That’s pretty darn good.

When the Nittany Lions take the field on Saturday, they’ll be playing their fourth straight game at Beaver Stadium and will aim to advance to 5-0 on the season. If you’ll be in attendance and don’t know what color to wear, make sure you check ahead of time.
