Former Lady Lion Tanisha Wright Named Head Coach Of WNBA’s Atlanta Dream

Former Penn State women’s basketball star Tanisha Wright was named the new head coach of the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday.

Wright played at Penn State from 2001 to 2005. Today, she still ranks four all-time in points scored with 1,995 in 134 games for the Lady Lions. She’s also a three-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

“It’s an honor to be chosen as head coach for the Atlanta Dream, and I’m excited to play a role in building a successful organization centered around the player experience,” Wright said in a press release. “I have been part of championship teams and understand what it takes to win in this league. I look forward to bringing my talents to this franchise and helping the Dream achieve success.”

Out of college, Wright was drafted to the WNBA in the first round of 2005 to the Seattle Storm. She wound up playing for 14 seasons in Seattle, New York, and Minnesota before becoming an assistant coach with the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces and UNC’s women’s basketball team.

Wright will take over as the seventh head coach in Atlanta Dream history. Founded in 2008, the franchise has reached the WNBA finals three times and most recently 8-24 in 2021.
