Penn State Men’s Soccer Crowned Big Ten Regular-Season Champion

It will be a fun trip back from Madison for Jeff Cook and Penn State men’s soccer.

After a crazy season of Big Ten play, the Nittany Lions have been crowned conference regular-season champions and will receive the No. 1 seed in next week’s tournament.

A Seth Kuhn brace powered Penn State to a 2-0 win over Wisconsin, and a helping hand in College Park secured Jeff Cook’s first Big Ten trophy, and the first for Penn State since 2013.

Heading into the final day of the regular season, Penn State was tied with Indiana on 15 points, with Maryland also in contention for top prize with 13. The Nittany Lions didn’t own the head-to-head tiebreaker with Indiana after the Hoosiers defeated Cook’s squad earlier this month.

The Terrapins hosted the Hoosiers at the same time Wisconsin hosted Penn State in Madison. Once Kuhn scored his first, the pressure turned to Indiana needing a win against Maryland to keep level with Penn State on points, while Maryland knew a Nittany Lions victory eliminated it from No. 1 contention.

Maryland then scored, forcing Indiana to get two. In the second half, things got better for the Nittany Lions, as Kuhn got his brace on a ridiculous curler, and the Terrapins found the back of the net for a second time to seal the deal.

As the dust settles, here is how it all shook up. Northwestern and Michigan State still have a game to play, which is underway at the time of writing. Penn State will play the No. 8 team in the Big Ten quarterfinal, while the No. 9 seed, currently Ohio State, is eliminated.

Penn State snaps a three-year Indiana stranglehold on the Big Ten, after Todd Yeagley’s side recorded the “triple double,” capturing the past six trophies available in the conference (regular season and tournament). The Nittany Lions will begin the postseason on Sunday, November 7.
