Senator Bob Casey: Provocateur’s Speaking Event ‘Antithetical To Penn State Values’

U.S. Senator Bob Casey Jr. has released a statement condemning an upcoming event at Penn State that will bring a controversial alt-right political commentator to campus.

Casey wrote that provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos’s previous comments, including controversial takes on LGBTQ+ issues, pedophilia, and child sex abuse, don’t align with Pennsylvania’s principles.

“Every student deserves a safe environment to learn, and this event is antithetical to Penn State and our Commonwealth’s values,” Casey said in a statement. “To the LGBTQ community at Penn State: I stand with you, and I will continue to fight in Congress for you and your rights.”

Penn State published a statement last week condemning Yiannopoulos’s history but reiterating that it won’t prevent a student organization from bringing him to campus. The University Park Allocation Committee, which helped fund the event using about $18,000 in student fees, said it’s neutral on the event and doesn’t “explicitly share” Yiannopoulos’s views.

“All viewpoints, including those that are controversial, must have an equal chance of receiving funding,” UPAC wrote in a statement.

The State College borough and the University Park Undergraduate Association, Penn State’s student government, have also released statements opposing Yiannapolous’s appearance.

So far, nearly 11,500 people have signed a Change.org petition urging Penn State to uninvite Yiannopoulos from campus.

Penn State’s Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity will host a “Love is Louder” event this week in opposition to Yiannopoulos’s appearance. The event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, November 3, in the HUB’s Heritage Hall. It’ll feature music, food, and activities to “inspire love and community within the Penn State student body.”
