Penn State Football’s Fred Hansard Releases Apology To Taulia Tagovailoa

Penn State football defensive tackle Fred Hansard released an apology to Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa Monday night via Twitter.

During the Nittany Lions’ 31-14 win over Maryland this past Saturday, FS1’s cameras caught Hansard shoving the Maryland quarterback when he was running along Penn State’s sideline. The shove took place early in the second half of Penn State’s win, but Hansard was not penalized for the action.

Tagovailoa seemed to be a bit shaken up after the late hit, but did not miss extended game action due to it.

“I would like to extend my sincere apologies for the unfortunate incident that took place on the sideline on Saturday. It was truly an act of impulse, and not malice,” Hansard wrote. “I believe in the integrity and the rules of the game. My actions were not in line with the expectations we have for ourselves as a Penn State Football program.”

Hansard also apologized to Nittany Lion offensive lineman Rasheed Walker. Walker also wears No. 53 for the team, and was mistakenly accused of shoving Tagovailoa during Saturday’s game. The rest of Hansard’s statement can be read here:

Hansard has been a member of the Penn State football team since 2017. As a redshirt senior this year, he’s earned time along the defensive line in six games but has yet to record a tackle.

Penn State hasn’t yet publicly announced any disciplinary action or suspension for Hansard. Head coach James Franklin will be made available to the media for his weekly press conference on Tuesday and will have a post-practice availability Wednesday night.
