Penn State Expands Employee COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate Across Entire University

Penn State faculty and staff across the entire state are now required to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the university announced Friday.

Employees have until January 4, 2022, to receive their final vaccine dose. Proof of vaccination needs to be shared with the university through an online portal by January 18.

To meet that January 4 deadline, employees need to receive their first doses of the Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines by December 7 and December 14, respectively. Anyone getting the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine could wait until January 4.

Earlier this fall, Penn State said employees could request medical/disability or religious exemptions from the university’s vaccine policy.

The requirement, which now applies to every Penn State location, comes as the university complies with a federal requirement formed through an executive order from President Joe Biden. Federal contractor vaccination requirements apply to employees at nine campuses, while the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) on Vaccination and Testing, which applies to any employer with more than 100 employees, covers every other Penn State site.

Employees at campuses following OSHA’s ETS guidelines can opt to skip full vaccination and instead get tested for COVID-19 weekly. Those at other campuses don’t have that option.

According to Penn State’s COVID-19 Dashboard, 85.1% of employees across the university have already submitted proof of vaccination. Those who haven’t verified their full vaccination (or received an exemption) are required to get tested for COVID-19 weekly.
