[Photo Story] Downtown Door Art Competition Unites Local Artists

Strolling down Calder Way, you’ll likely see mural after mural featuring the creativity of local artists lining the backs and sides of buildings.

Now, in addition to colorful murals, you can find delightfully decorated doors down the alleyway.

The Downtown State College Improvement District recently invited local artists to participate in the Backdoor Art Competition as part of the 2021 Calder Walkway lighting experience. This event aims to support the local art scene and liven up the alleyways.

The above door, titled “Jungle”, was created by Kristen Byrne. It is located on the back door of Common Place. Their Instagram page is @K.byrne_arts if you want to check out more of their work.

This door is called “Family” by Melissa Peragine, and it features a bright colorful design located on the back door of Rapid Transit Sportswear. As the door says in the bottom right corner, she can be contacted at Deluxa@gmail.com.

The final door in the competition is “Notre-Dame Cathedral” by Megan Gottfried. This door serves as the backdoor to Kish Bank. More of her work can be seen on her Instagram account.

Community members are encouraged to vote for their favorite design. The artist that garners the most votes will receive a $150 gift card.
