Penn State Ranked Among Top Schools For Undergraduate Entrepreneurship

Penn State was recently ranked No. 21 among the nation’s top schools for undergraduate entrepreneurship, according to The Princeton Review.

Penn State hopped 15 spots from last year’s No. 36 ranking. Out of the schools in the northeast, Penn State ranked fifth.

The top-rated schools in the study included the University of Houston, Babson College, BYU, UT Austin, and USC.

The Princeton Review and Entrepreneurship magazine collected data from more than 300 schools with entrepreneurship studies and programs as part of a survey conducted between June and August. Data points included course offerings, course enrollment percentages, business plan, and pitch competition availability, among others. A comprehensive list of criteria can be found here.

Penn State’s ranking is in part based on data from the Farrell Center for Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Smeal College of Business, the Entrepreneurship and Innovation (ENTI) minor, the Center for Penn State Student Entrepreneurship, and the Office of Entrepreneurship and Commercialization.

“The intercollege access of Penn State undergraduate entrepreneurship courses is unique and recognized as an international model,” Vice President for Undergraduate Education Yvonne Gaudelius said. “Over the last 10 years, over 19,000 students from 169 majors have enrolled in at least one course offered from the Center’s intercollege minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation (ENTI).”

“Every one of Penn State’s undergraduate students from any of our campuses has access to at least three entrepreneurship courses,” she continued. “Undergraduate entrepreneurship is also customized at most Penn State campuses to meet the needs of local students and build networks with regional entrepreneurs and business support services.”

Students can enroll in Smeal’s Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship major and ten different ENTI minor tracks.

As part of Invent Penn State, there are 21 LaunchBoxes and Innovation Hubs across the state which provide no-cost resources to entrepreneurs and innovators. In its five years of existence, over 13,000 faculty, staff, and students have engaged in the network. Check out the newest Innovation Hub that opened at 123 S. Burrowes Street here.

“We are seeing sustained success in growing new startup companies through the Invent Penn State initiative,” Lora Weiss, senior vice president for research, said. “The recent success of our student founders in raising venture capital is not only driving economic development and job creation in Pennsylvania, but also was a large contributing factor to our national ranking.”
