Student Arrested In Connection To Thefts At The Standard

State College police arrested a Penn State student over the weekend after he allegedly stole more than $5,000 worth of items from apartments at The Standard complex downtown.

According to a criminal complaint from District Judge Thomas Jordan’s office, student Nishith Kapoor faces charges for burglary, criminal trespassing, theft, and receiving stolen property. He’s scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, December 22.

The Standard’s staff and State College police received reports of stolen items on Sunday. Kapoor was allegedly seen checking “various doors” on Saturday before breaking into some 11th-floor apartments that were left unlocked.

Video footage reviewed by police showed Kapoor entering at least two apartments and removing a handful of items, including a personal laptop, a fan, and a pair of shoes. Building staff said Kapoor’s pockets were “filled with items” as he used the elevator after stealing the laptop.

State College police interviewed one group of apartment tenants who reported a handful of missing items, including a MacBook Pro valued at $2,500 and an iPhone valued at about $1,000, plus some IDs, credit and debit cards, and keys. Two claimed they were sleeping at the time of the burglary and told police Kapoor had no reason to be inside their apartment.

According to the criminal complaint, police made contact with Kapoor on Sunday and found him in possession of the stolen laptop.

Before Kapoor was arrested, dozens of Standard residents flooded the building’s Instagram page with comments complaining about a lack of action. A homemade poster posted on Instagram poked fun at building management’s unsatisfactory response.

In an email to residents on Sunday, the Standard promised “openness and transparency” and said its property management team was cooperating with the police investigation. The complex encouraged residents to lock their doors and report “suspicious persons” to the police.
