Struck By Car, Penn State Grad Finishes Live News Report

One Penn State graduate put her determination to the test Tuesday night when she dutifully finished a news report after she was struck by a vehicle moments earlier.

Reporting for WSAZ-TV in Charleston, West Virginia, 2018 Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications grad Tori Yorgey refused to give up when she was struck by an SUV at the scene of a water main break.

“Oh my god! I just got hit by a car, but I’m OK. I just got hit by a car, but I’m OK, Tim,” Yorgey told anchor Tim Irr moments after the altercation. “You know, that’s live TV for you.”

In the process of picking up her camera to continue the live shot, Yorgey noted that she was similarly struck by a vehicle while working in college. She would later even assure the SUV’s driver that she was all right before continuing her report.

“My whole life flashed before my eyes, but this is live TV, and everything is OK,” Yorgey said, almost appearing in shock. “I thought I was in a safe spot, but clearly we might need to move the camera over a little bit.”

Yorgey and anchor Tim Irr both took to Twitter later to add context to the scene, noting that everyone’s all right in the grand scheme of things. Yorgey visited a hospital as a precaution but didn’t sustain any notable injuries.

Thursday night, Yorgey published a post noting how surprised she was by reactions to her altercation. She also noted that her station’s anchor, Irr, couldn’t see Yorgey’s feed as she was struck by the SUV, which could explain the uninterested reaction many criticized.

Yorgey’s wild altercation came just as she’s getting ready to leave WSAZ-TV. After her last day on Friday, she’ll move to a new position at ABC affiliate WTAE in Pittsburgh on February 1.
