Palmer Museum Of Art Marks 50th Anniversary With American Exhibit This Spring

To mark its 50th anniversary this year, the Palmer Museum of Art will launch an exhibit celebrating American art beginning this weekend.

From Saturday, January 28, through April 24, museum-goers can experience “An American Place: Selections from the James and Barbara Palmer Collection.” The collection will feature 59 paintings and sculptures from the post-Civil War years all the way through the Civil Rights era. Highlighted artists include Georgia O’Keefe, Paul Cadmus, and Winslow Homer, among others.

The name of the exhibit comes from photographer Alfred Stieglitz’s “An American Place,” which was one of several galleries he established to help modernist art in the early 20th century.

“We are proud to present this major exhibition devoted to the signature collection of American art assembled by our great benefactors the late Barbara and James Palmer,” Erin M. Coe, director of the Palmer Museum of Art, said in a news release. “This collection will shape, even define, the museum’s presentation of American art for generations to come.”

This exhibition is not the only part of the Palmer Museum’s celebration. There are plenty of events that supplement the exhibit, such as conversations about Homer’s work, talking with the curator as to why these pieces were selected, and a “Party on the Plaza” celebration.

Two more exhibits are running alongside “An American Place”: “A Way Through: Abstract Art of the 1940s” and “Printmaking in the Age of Dürer.” The former is in partnership with the Philadelphia Museum of Art that features a few pieces on loan, while the latter celebrates German artist Albrecht Dürer and the first-ever piece that was acquired for the museum.

If you cannot attend these events, there will be plenty more as the year goes on, including a student-centered birthday bash, a celebratory gala in May, and a community-wide paint-out in the Arboretum over the summer. Information about these events and more can be found on the museum’s website.
