Staff Picks: Name-Plated Penn State Football Jerseys We Want Most

Nearly eight years after pulling player jerseys from shelves, Penn State football is bringing them back next fall through a new partnership with Fanatics.

Now that fans will, once again, be able to purchase their favorite Nittany Lion’s jersey, our staffers happily brainstormed which threads they’d want to rock.

Frankie Marzano: Ji’Ayir Brown

Who wouldn’t want to sport No. 16 after the 2021 season that Ji’Ayir Brown had? The New Jersey native finished the year with 55 solo tackles and four interceptions, even returning one for a touchdown. Now that the safety is returning for the 2022 season, I think that this one will be a popular purchase.

Dana Nunemacher: Sam Ficken

Give me my No. 97. I am the biggest Sam Ficken fan, and I will fight you on it. He is a perfect human and can do no wrong. Penn State, please allow my middle school dreams to come true. Sam, I love you <3

Megan Kelby: Kalen King

Currently worn by cornerback Kalen King, the No. 4 jersey would be my first pick from the new Fanatics collaboration. Playing in nine games as a true freshman during the 2021 season, King proved his place on Penn State’s defense with notable performances against Rutgers and in the Outback Bowl.

With all that promise for just a sophomore, a No. 4 jersey seems like a good investment. On top of that, the jersey formerly belonged to running back Journey Brown before his medical retirement. The jersey, without a name, would be able to pay homage to the greatness Brown showed in his short time and the potential King is showing now.

Sam Fremin: Dani Dennis-Sutton

With the fickle nature of modern college football, if I’m going to buy a player’s jersey, I want to be in for the long haul. Incoming five-star defensive end recruit Dani Dennis-Sutton is poised for stardom, and I expect he’ll be an early contributor. Plus, non-90 jersey numbers on the defensive line look so clean for some reason. I’m here for No. 33.

Will Pegler: DaeSean Hamilton

DaeSean Hamilton has to be one of the most underrated members of Penn State’s legendary 2016 squad. The Virginia native made 34 catches during that magical run, including eight grabs worth 118 yards in the Big Ten Championship game, and only produced at a higher clip during his senior season in 2017. Hamilton also left Penn State with a program-record 214 career catches.

Jahan Dotson has obviously made the No. 5 his own over the past few seasons, but I’d love to rock it in honor of Hamilton.

Matt DiSanto: Whatever Drew Allar Wears

After quickly browsing his official Penn State Athletics profile, it seems five-star prospect Allar hasn’t picked out a jersey number quite yet. No problem. I’ll be patient and wait my turn to pick up threads honoring Penn State’s golden child quarterback of the future. Presumably, he’d wear No. 14 once it’s no longer in use by “returning starter” Sean Clifford.

Gabe Angieri: Tank Smith

Why the hell wouldn’t I want to rock Tank Smith’s No. 38? It’s Tank Smith, folks.
