Former Penn State Tight End Al Golden Named Notre Dame Defensive Coordinator

Former Penn State tight end and letterman Al Golden will serve as Notre Dame’s next defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, the team officially announced on Wednesday. His new contract with the Fighting Irish reportedly last three years.

This will be Golden’s first college coaching position since being fired from the University of Miami’s head coaching position in 2015. Golden has spent the last seven years coaching tight ends and linebackers for the Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals. Most recently, Golden led the Bengals’ linebacker corps in Super Bowl LVI.

Prior to his tenure in the NFL, Golden served as head coach of Temple from 2006 to 2010 and Miami (Fla.) from 2011 to 2015. Over his 10 seasons as head coach, Golden amassed an even 59-59 record and landed two conference championship berths but failed to secure any titles.

“Al’s defensive background and knowledge of this profession makes him a valuable asset to our program,” said newly minted Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman. “He is known for getting the absolute best out of his players both on and off the field. Additionally, he will be a great resource for me and others on our staff with his previous experience as a head coach. I am thrilled that he has joined our staff at Notre Dame.”

At Penn State, Golden served as linebackers coach for the 2000 season. More notably, Golden captained the Nittany Lions to a No. 3 finish and Fiesta Bowl win in the 1991 season as a senior.

Arguably Golden’s most prominent highlight of his playing career ironically came against his new school. Golden was instrumental in the Nittany Lions’ 24-21 upset over No. 1 ranked Notre Dame in 1990. His fourth-quarter touchdown reception tied the game following a Penn State rally to close a 21-7 gap.
