3/20 Coalition To Host Week Of Events To Honor Osaze Osagie

This week, State College’s 3/20 Coalition will host a variety of events to honor the life of community member Osaze Osagie, who was fatally shot three years ago by State College police.

The group’s events also hope to educate the community about the Black Lives Matter movement, bias in the U.S. education system, and more.

The week kicked off on Monday, March 14, with a “Reflect and Respect” memorial rededication. There, members of the coalition came together downtown and dedicated their time to those murdered by police.

From 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, the 3/20 Coalition will host a “Draw For Justice” event at 3 Dots Downtown. At this event, attendees can learn more about legislation and view a community art mural. Also on display will be an interactive experience displaying Osage’s murder.

An online panel at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, will discuss a variety of topics regarding mental health in Black Americans, bias in the U.S. education system, and how the community can come together to respond to these instances of bias happening locally.

Those interested in attending the week’s events will also have a chance from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, to view a plethora of local art displays dedicated to Osagie’s life at the Schlow Library downtown.

Later, on Friday, March 18, a community movie night will take place at Webster’s Cafe starting at 6:30 p.m. There, attendees will have the opportunity to watch a docuseries made by two local State College residents titled “Black Tea”. The docuseries features the lives of Black individuals in State College and opens up a conversation about their experiences.

On Saturday, March 19, the 3/20 Coalition will host a “Complacency Kills” protest beginning at 1 p.m. at the Allen Street Gates. From there, the group will travel to the site of Osagie’s murder, which occurred nearly three years ago to the day. The week’s events will culminate on March 20 with an eight-hour “3/20 celebration.”

More information about the 3/20 Coalition, the week’s events, and more can be found through the group’s Facebook page.
