SNL’s Mikey Day Entertains Penn State At SPA Comedy Show

“Saturday Night Live” writer and comedian Mikey Day spoke to a few hundred Penn State students in the HUB Monday night during a comedy show presented by Penn State’s Student Programming Association (SPA).

Day joined the SNL team as a writer in 2014 and soon joined the cast. He is a former UCLA theatre undergrad and started his comedy career with The Groundlings, an improv theatre group based in Los Angeles.

Opening for Day was first-year SNL writer Alex English. He can be seen on HBO’s “That Damn Michael Che” and on Comedy Central, where he had his stand-up debut on “Ilana Glazer Presents: Tight Five”.

English shares his outlook on life as a black Gay man, making jokes about his LGBTQ+ community and the recent Black Lives Matter movement.

“It is a really good time to be a gay Black man in America…unless your name is Jussie Smollett,” English joked. “Finally, America gets to see a gay Black fuck up.”

English then welcomed his friend and co-worker to the stage for the main event.

Donning a slick Penn State t-shirt, Day quickly won over the crowd with a reference any bar-bound Penn Stater would know.

“Any Champs fans? I heard about Champs…All right, goodnight,” Day said while pretending to exit the stage.

Day soon made the crowd roar with laughter again with another Penn State reference, this time about the dorms.

“I heard that East is nice and Pollock is run-down, no.. yes? It sounds like Pollock is a police show where they go to interview someone shady ‘WELCOME TO POLLOCK!'” Day exclaimed.

Day poked fun at a handful of topics, including texts with his technologically inept father. He also voiced multiple different characters, ranging from a Nickelodeon show, people in East Halls, biology and engineering majors, and 50-year-olds at the bars.

Day later brought a student onto the stage and asked her about Penn State’s party scene. After answering that she is in the Penn State Thespian Society, Day was quick to poke fun.

Nerrrrddd alert,” Day joked. “No, I’m kidding. I was, too” he continued, adding that he was a classic theatre kid.

Day continued moving around the stage, singing as he did in school and mocking his nerdy self with memories from his youth.

“The moral of these stories is that I am a big dooooOOOOrk,” Day howled at the crowd.

Day spent a part of his show campaigning for new hosts to join SNL for a week. Of course, he focused on HBO’s hit, “Euphoria,” which won over the crowd.

“I think [Zendaya] would be awesome,” Day said.

The SNL star ended his act with a Q&A session in which students asked about his history working with SNL, his favorite skit, and his time spent with the beloved Harry Styles.

“Thank you guys so much for having me,” Day said at the end of his show. “Hopefully, you were entertained…a little bit?”
