EcoReps To Host Earth Hour Lantern Displays March 26

Penn State’s EcoReps will host lantern displays across campus on Saturday, March 26, to commemorate Earth Hour — an annual celebration that seeks to reduce electric consumption.

Penn Staters are encouraged to reduce their electricity usage from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday to reduce emissions and help combat climate change. Old Main’s clock tower will also turn off during the hour to support EcoReps’ cause.

Across campus, EcoReps will host lantern displays at Old Main Lawn and the Nittany Lion Shrine during Earth Hour, too.

Since the holiday’s creation in 2007, people have annually celebrated Earth Hour on the last Saturday of March. The observation, which started as a symbolic “lights out” event held by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia, is now recognized by more than 2 million people across more than 190 nations worldwide.

To participate in this year’s event, take an online pledge (at the bottom of the linked webpage) to turn off your lights and other electronics for the duration of the hour. The pledge asks participants to support efforts to save wildlife and protect nature, as the two are “vital to our survival and prosperity.”

Penn State’s EcoReps will light one lantern for each pledge that is taken. For more information on the topic, visit EcoReps’ website.
