Citing Health Issues, Robert Windsor Retires From Football

Former Penn State defensive lineman Robert Windsor is hanging up his cleats due to lingering health issues.

Windsor, who joined the Colts as the No. 193 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, underwent two “major” surgeries to treat his hip and groin. He took to Twitter Wednesday night to officially announce his retirement.

“Up until this point, football has been my identity and how I receive my self-worth,” Windsor wrote online. “If I’ve learned anything from football, it is that pain ultimately leads to growth. This pain has forced me to look within myself and find out who I am without the game I have loved and played my whole life.”

In his statement, Windsor said his rehab efforts ultimately weren’t putting him back into the shape he’d need to be in to compete on the gridiron. Still, he’s staying positive as he turns his attention to a journey of “self-discovery and healing.”

“I am eternally grateful for everything football has given me and for those who have helped me grow along the way,” Windsor said. “I wish I still had more to give to the game that has given me so much, but sadly, things don’t last forever, and my time to retire has come.”

Windsor appeared in two games for the Colts in 2020 and recorded two solo tackles. He didn’t see any action throughout the 2021 season.

At Penn State, Windsor starred on the Nittany Lions’ defensive line and started 12 games during a breakout season as a junior. He averaged 39 tackles and 5.5 sacks per season as an upperclassman en route to back-to-back second-team All-Big Ten honors.
