Students Teaching Students Unveils Fall 2022 Courses

Penn State’s Students Teaching Students (STS) program has introduced four student-led courses that will launch this fall.

Through the program, undergraduate students teach official courses at Penn State under the supervision of a faculty member. This fall’s one-credit courses will take a deep dive into the language of the internet, music in video games, Formula One racing, and musical collaboration.

The four classes that will be offered this fall are one credit.

Here’s a brief overview of STS’ new fall 2022 courses:

COMM 197-001: Special Topics: Introduction To Formula One

  • Instructors — Chase Adler & Dan Risser
  • 4:40 to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays

This course will discuss the history, politics, and strategy of Formula One racing. It’ll cover everything needed to become a top fan.

APLNG 297-003: The Language Of The Internet

  • Instructor — Vincent Mariani
  • 2:30 to 3:20 p.m. on Mondays

This course will help students explore how language is influenced by the internet — be it emoticons or abbreviations.

MUSIC 297-002: “Play It Again”: The Role Of Music In Video Games

  • Instructor — Isaac Manfull
  • 12:20 to 1:05 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays

This course will explore the role of music as a tool for storytelling and immersion in interactive digital media.

MUSIC 297-003: The Art Of Collaboration

  • Instructors — Matthew Kidd & Rachel Flicker
  • 4:40 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays

School of Music students will come together once a week to discuss how to successfully collaborate together while producing an effective performance.

This spring, students were able to take courses including American musical theater, menstrual equality, Antiblackness in America, and even hip-hop and Kid Cudi. Most notably, in spring 2020, STS taught Criticism of Kanye, a course that used Kanye West as the primary case study for an in-depth literary and cultural look into hip-hop music.

Students can check out STS’s website for more information on the courses, scheduling, and the program itself.
