WPSU To Celebrate 70 Years Of Educational Television With April 20 Freebies

WPSU Radio will hold celebratory events on April 20 to recognize and honor the 70th anniversary of the creation of educational television.

In 1952, the Educational Television Program Institute opened at the Nittany Lion Inn, co-chaired by Penn State President Milton S. Eisenhower. A response to the FCC’s release of 242 channels for educational programming, the conference helped develop the content and funding plan of today’s modern media.

From noon to 3 p.m. on the HUB Lawn, WPSU will celebrate the occasion by distributing free creamery ice cream (WPSU Coffee Break, of course) and commemorative laptop stickers. Similar events have been planned at Penn State’s DuBois and Altoona, too.

These days, WPSU remains involved in the production of educational television. The station’s website touts “a welcoming and inclusive culture that strives to enhance community engagement, deliver regional news, [and] promote Pre-K through 12 school success.”
