Bicyclist Dies After Being Struck By Driver In State College

A State College man has died after being struck by a driver while riding his bicycle in the Greentree neighborhood on Thursday night.

Jose Sajbin died on Friday at UPMC Altoona of injuries sustained in the crash. Sajbin was a husband and father of two children, according to a GoFundMe established for his family.

“Jose was a kind and friendly man who worked hard to provide for his family,” Paige Castellanos, organizer of the fundraiser, wrote. “May he now rest in peace.”

Sajbin was traveling on the bicycle path crossing Edgewood Circle at about 7:55 p.m. on Thursday when he was struck by a 16-year-old female driving a sedan, borough police Capt. Greg Brauser said. Sajbin was flown by helicopter to Altoona to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

The crash is being investigated by State College police and the regional crash reconstruction team.

After being created on Saturday, the GoFundMe has raised more than $15,000 to assist his family with funeral services and Sajbin’s repatriation to his native Guatemala.

“Following the wishes of his parents, sending him back to Guatemala will allow them to grieve and find solace,” Castellanos wrote. “The financial burden of this for a family that was already struggling to make ends meet is practically impossible. But as a community, we can lift this family up and provide some peace during this tragic event.”
