Piecing Together Penn State Women’s Volleyball’s 2022 Conference Schedule

We’re just a few months away from the start of a new era for Penn State women’s volleyball.

Following the retirement of legendary head coach Russ Rose, Katie Schumacher-Cawley was named the third head coach in program history this offseason. Schumacher-Cawley will take the reigns and embark on the tough task of succeeding Rose.

On Tuesday, the Big Ten announced its full conference schedule for the 2022 season. While the Nittany Lions haven’t announced their schedule yet, we were able to piece together their conference schedule based on the release from the Big Ten.

Penn State’s 20-match conference slate will begin with a home battle against Indiana on September 23. The Nittany Lions will play Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Purdue, Illinois, Maryland, and Rutgers each twice this season and match up against every other conference foe once.

The team’s conference schedule in October could provide the biggest challenge for Penn State. Beginning with an October 7 trip to Columbus, the Nittany Lions will play five of their next seven games on the road, including three straight road matchups against Nebraska, Iowa, and Maryland, respectively.

Later in the season, Schumacher-Cawley’s squad will once again hit the road for three straight matches, this time against Rutgers, Indiana, and Purdue. However, Penn State will return to Rec Hall for three of its last four matches to close out its 2022 conference slate.

Here’s a look at the full pieced-together conference schedule:

  • September 23 vs. Indiana
  • September 24 vs. Michigan
  • September 30 @ Wisconsin
  • October 2 vs. Michigan State
  • October 7 @ Ohio State
  • October 9 vs. Illinois
  • October 14 @ Nebraska
  • October 15 @ Iowa
  • October 21 @ Maryland
  • October 23 vs. Rutgers
  • October 26 @ Illinois
  • October 29 vs. Ohio State
  • November 2 vs. Maryland
  • November 6 @ Rutgers
  • November 11 @ Indiana
  • November 12 @ Purdue
  • November 18 vs. Minnesota
  • November 19 vs. Wisconsin
  • November 23 @ Northwestern
  • November 25 vs. Purdue

It remains to be seen how Penn State’s non-conference schedule will unfold. Last year, the team released its full schedule on June 28, so we could be another few weeks away from seeing the complete thing.

Penn State went 21-11 during the 2021 season and boasted a 13-7 record within the conference. The squad’s season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament when it fell to Pitt, which ended up advancing all the way to the tournament semifinals.
