Penn State Achieves High Marks In Global Academic Ranking

We’ve always known that Penn Staters are among the smartest in the world, but now we have the rankings to prove it.

Penn State showed its academic strength with the release of the 2022 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) on July 25. This year, Penn State was placed in the top 50 in 14 subjects, and in the top 100 in 16 additional subjects.

The list, which is compiled annually by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), evaluates universities in relevant subjects based on research output, international collaboration, academic awards, and more.

Penn State’s highest ranking is Sociology, which was ranked seventh worldwide. Material Sciences and Engineering came in second for Penn State at 14th place, followed by Mining and Mineral Engineering and Hospitality and Tourism Management, each ranked at 15th.

“I’m particularly impressed by the broad interdisciplinarity evident in these subject rankings,” said Roger Brindley, vice provost for Penn State Global. “It speaks to the academic and research excellence found across the whole Penn State community.”

GRAS ranked 1,800 schools across 96 countries in this edition of the study, which has been conducted by ARWU since 2009. A complete list of Penn State’s rankings can be found on the organization’s website.
