Tony Hawk’s Organization Donates $30K To State College Skatepark Plans

The Skatepark Project, an organization founded by legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk, is helping to make the State College skatepark a reality.

The organization is donating $30,000 to the project that is hoping to break ground by next spring.

The 20,000-square-foot skatepark will be located in High Point Park off of West Whitehall Road. It will include ledges, stairs, rails, banks, a mini-ramp, brick volcano, quarterpipe, boulder seating, and a center courtyard with a granite pad. It will replace an unused baseball field.

“The Skatepark Project is proud to support a project like the High Point Skatepark,” Benjamin Anderson Bashein, executive director of The Skatepark Project, said in a release. “It’s clear that so many from the community have come together to get this project off the ground; their dedication, hard work and engagement is inspiring and we look forward to seeing them reach their fundraising and ground breaking goals.”

According to a release, The Skatepark Project is a nonprofit that aims to “increase access to free, outdoor recreation by equipping communities with resources they need to get skateparks built.” It has awarded over $10 million in grants and helped to create nearly 700 public skateparks.

Professional skateboard and co-founder of IQ Skateshop Jake Johnson worked with his dad on a design that would accommodate all skill levels of BMXers and skaters. IQ Skateshop opened last August on the corner of Pugh Street and Calder Way and sells decks, wheels, apparel, footwear, and more.

The idea of an action sports park was first proposed in 2013, and New Line Skateparks was contracted last fall to come up with a final design and lead construction. Construction is expected to be $1.9 million.

So far, $800,000 has been raised from grants, the borough, and local residents. The group also created a fundraising campaign this month aimed to raise another $50,000 in small community donations.
