Palmer Museum Of Art To Celebrate 50th Anniversary With Three New Exhibits

To conclude celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the Palmer Museum of Art will launch three new exhibitions commemorating the past and future of the museum.

From August 26 to December 18, museum-goers can experience the first of these three exhibitions, “The Art of Remembering: A Selection of Gifts.” The collection seeks to honor the permanent gifts to the museum’s collection from patrons and will feature a selection of works from 19th and 20th-century European and American artists.

A second exhibit, “Looking at Who We Are: The Palmer at Fifty,” will be open from September 23 to December 18. The exhibition will feature 74 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and sculptures from the museum’s permanent collection that explore how history, place, and community shape the conception of museums.

Additionally, the exhibit will feature a 30-foot timeline showcasing notable events in the museum’s history.

The name of the exhibit comes from Penn State’s iconic “We Are” chant. Highlighted artists include Eleanor Antin, Pablo Picasso, Utagawa Kunisada II, Alexander Rodchenko, and Andy Warhol.

The final exhibit in the museum’s anniversary celebration, “Designed for the Future: The New Palmer Museum of Art at the Arboretum,” will run from October 15 to May 8 and focus on the museum’s future.

Visitors will be able to take a look at the architectural models, drawings, renderings, and animations of the Palmer Museum’s new building, which is expected to open in 2024.

“We are at a transformative moment in the history of the Palmer Museum of Art,” Erin M. Coe, director of the Palmer Museum of Art, said in a news release. “As we celebrate five decades of serving our communities as the largest academic art museum in Pennsylvania, we look toward a bright future in the new building that will double the Palmer’s exhibition space and enhance accessibility.”

If you’re unable to go view these exhibits, there will be plenty more events throughout the fall, including lectures, webinars, a birthday bash, and more. Information about these events can be found on the museum’s website.
